Nigerian passport holders need a visa to enter Vietnam, and the eVisa is open to you online. Here's what getting a Vietnam visa for Nigeria-issued passports involves: the documents, the extra boxes the form adds for Nigerians, what it costs and how long it takes.
Yes, you need a visa. Nigeria isn't on either of Vietnam's 45-day exemption lists: not the 12 countries under Resolution 44/NQ-CP, and not the 12 European countries added for tourism under Resolution 229/NQ-CP. It isn't one of the 15 countries with a bilateral visa-free agreement either.
The eVisa is the door that's open. Citizens of every country and territory have been able to apply for a Vietnam eVisa since August 15, 2023, valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. You can use it at 83 border crossings: 17 airports, 27 land border gates and 39 seaports.
What makes your application different is a flag. The eVisa system's own nationality list marks Nigeria as restricted, alongside Ghana and Congo and no one else. You're still eligible. The flag changes the form, and the section on Nigerian fields below explains how.
Two exceptions are worth knowing. Phu Quoc island is visa-free for up to 30 days for every nationality (see the questions below). And if you also hold a British passport, it gets you in visa-free for up to 45 days, so it may be the better one to travel on; the form asks about other nationalities and passports, so answer truthfully. Other passports have other rules: compare Vietnam visa rules by nationality.
No embassy trip, no visa-on-arrival line. You apply online, and the eVisa arrives as a PDF.
Visa on arrival still exists, but only in specific cases and only with a pre-approval letter from Vietnam Immigration that a sponsor in Vietnam has to obtain first. We don't process visa-on-arrival letters. For a tourist or a short business trip, the eVisa is simpler.
Vietnam Visa by BDA is a private company, not affiliated with the Vietnamese government, and nothing stops you filing at evisa.gov.vn yourself for the stamp fee alone. What you'd pay us for is a check of the extra Nigerian fields before Vietnam Immigration ever sees them.
Have these ready before you start:
⚠️ Emergency and temporary passports won't work. Vietnam Immigration's eVisa site doesn't issue visas for emergency or temporary passports. If your passport is damaged or close to expiry, replace it before you apply. Enter and leave Vietnam on the same passport: renew it mid-trip and the visa has to be transferred to the new one.
| Option | Validity | Our fee (per applicant) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Month Single Entry | 30 days from arrival | $54 |
| 1 Month Multiple Entry | 30 days from arrival | $84 |
| 3 Month Single Entry | 90 days from arrival | $94 |
| 3 Month Multiple Entry | 90 days from arrival | $104 |
All prices include the Vietnam Immigration Department's stamp fee. Here's the full fee breakdown.
The stamp fee is $25 for a single-entry eVisa and $50 for multiple entry, and our fee is the difference. On the one-month single-entry eVisa, $25 of your $54 goes to Vietnam Immigration and $29 is ours. Vietnam Immigration doesn't refund its eVisa fee if the application is refused, whoever files it.
Every charge is in US dollars, processed by our payment partner OnePay. Nigerian banks set their own caps on international spending with naira cards, and several raised them in 2026; FirstBank's naira Mastercard allows up to $10,000 a quarter. Ask your bank what your card allows abroad before you pay, and read our payment guidelines first.
Our speed tiers, per applicant:
Those times run from when we file with Vietnam Immigration, normally within 2 business hours of your payment, rather than from checkout. By law, Vietnam Immigration has 3 working days to decide an eVisa once it has the complete application and the fee; in practice 3 to 5 working days is normal. Immigration sets the pace. We can file, chase and correct, but we can't push an approval forward.
Plan around Tet. Vietnam's civil service, Immigration included, is off from Thursday, February 4 to Wednesday, February 10, 2027. Give yourself one to two weeks before your Lagos departure and the speed tiers stop mattering. Leaving within 24 hours? Phone +84 832 320 320 before you pay, and we'll say plainly whether it can be done.
Decide by the shape of the trip, not the price. Lagos to Vietnam and home again with no border crossing in between: single entry. A side trip to Cambodia, Laos or Thailand and back into Vietnam: multiple entry, because a single-entry eVisa is spent the moment you leave. When in doubt, choose multiple entry.
Multiple entry costs $30 more on a one-month visa and $10 more on a three-month visa. On the shorter visa, $25 of that gap is the higher stamp fee.
One Nigeria-specific catch: length matters on your form. Dates longer than 30 days trigger the mandatory Vietnam contact described in the next section, even on a tourist trip.
Choose Nigeria as your nationality on the eVisa form and several boxes that are optional for most travelers become mandatory:
None of them is hard if you prepare. Book your first nights before you apply, so you have a hotel phone number for the Vietnam phone box. Copy the place of issue exactly as your passport prints it. Give an expenses figure that fits the trip you've booked. If you don't have travel cover yet, our Travel Insurance add-on is $30, underwritten by PVI Insurance, with coverage up to $10,000.
⚠️ More than 30 days as a tourist means naming a contact in Vietnam. For Nigerian applicants, the form requires a contact agency or organization in Vietnam unless the purpose is "Tourist" and the stay is 30 days or less. If no Vietnamese company, hotel or host will agree to be named, keep the purpose to Tourist and the dates to 30 days or less.
Vietnam hasn't published what else, if anything, the flag affects. What it visibly changes is the form, and every extra box is another place for a mismatch with your documents. That's what our review is for: see how we review each field before filing.
The eVisa form's photo instructions ask for:
The portal's photo rules say no hat and publish no exception for religious head coverings, so don't assume one. If you wear a head covering for religious reasons, contact us at support@vietnamvisa.govt.vn before you apply, and we'll talk it through with you before you pay.
The standard form takes under 10 minutes. The Nigerian fields add more, so have the hotel number and employer details in front of you before you start.
Expect a long day. Emirates' route page shows Lagos to Ho Chi Minh City via Dubai at 20 hours 15 minutes in total, and the Gulf connection decides where you land:
Put the airport you'll actually land at on the form. Long Thanh, the new airport near Ho Chi Minh City, is on the eVisa list but isn't open yet, so a Ho Chi Minh City arrival means SGN.
Your eVisa's end date is the last day you can be in Vietnam. Past it, Decree 282/2025/ND-CP, in force since December 15, 2025, fines you by how long you've overstayed:
Reach 16 days and deportation can be added to the fine; a deportation keeps you out of Vietnam for three years. UK travel advice adds that overstayers can be stopped from leaving until the fine is paid, which is a bad way to miss a 20-hour flight home.
⚠️ An extension isn't a safety net. Extensions are done from inside Vietnam, through a sponsor (a company, organization or person in Vietnam) applying to Vietnam Immigration. We don't handle extensions. If your plans might run past a month, buy the three-month eVisa before you fly, and line up the Vietnam contact the form will ask for.
It's the government's own eVisa site, evisa.gov.vn (its Vietnamese-language alias is thithucdientu.gov.vn), where every eVisa is applied for and issued. You can apply there yourself and pay only the stamp fee, and the same Nigerian fields apply. We're the alternative for travelers who want the form checked: we prepare, check and file it, and Vietnam Immigration decides.
Sources disagree, so pack your yellow card if you have one. The CDC lists Vietnam's yellow fever entry requirement as "Vaccine is not required", and Canada's travel advice says proof of vaccination isn't required. An undated Australian Embassy page says proof is compulsory for travelers arriving within 6 days of leaving or transiting an infected area.
Not if you stay on the island. Phu Quoc is visa-free for up to 30 days, whether you fly in from abroad or connect through another Vietnamese international airport without leaving the transit area. Crossing to the mainland without a visa can bring a fine of VND 3 to 5 million. India's embassy in Hanoi advised its citizens in April 2026 to get a visa even for island-only trips, because some needed the mainland for medical treatment or onward travel. Unless you're sure you'll stay put, the same advice fits you.
Vietnam Immigration keeps its stamp fee: it isn't refunded if an application is refused. Our refunds cover what happens before filing. If we spot a problem, or anticipate that Immigration would deny the application, we tell you and refund the full amount paid. They aren't a money-back promise on a refusal after filing. Our answers on refusals and refunds cover the details.
Embassy applications are a separate, paper process. Vietnam's Consular Department publishes a visa application form for Vietnamese consular offices, with one photo attached and fees set by the mission, not by the eVisa price list. Check with the embassy before you travel to Abuja. For most travelers the eVisa saves the trip, and it has no paper version.
Elsewhere in Africa: Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia.
